Youth violence in the United States is a major societal issue. A major factor contributing to youth violence is poverty. Poverty is highly correlated with the use of firearms, the number of violent crimes committed, and the likelihood of being the victim of a violent crime. Between 1970 and 2000, the United States experienced an increase in the murder rate and a decrease in overall crime rate. The United States experienced a 25% decrease in violent crime, a 25% decrease in the rate of gun deaths, and a 10% decrease in overall crime. The murder rate for men was higher in the 1960s and 1970s, than in the 1990s. This was attributed to the rise in the number of white males in prison, the increase of the number of white males who had served in Vietnam, the growth of the crack cocaine market, and the introduction of the crack epidemic.
In 2017, a new statistic was introduced by the Center for Disease Control. Youth poverty is a major factor contributing to violence among youth. Between 2000 and 2016, the youth poverty rate grew to 17.9%, from 14.6%. With the increase in the poverty rate, the youth unemployment rate grew to 13.6% in 2017, from 9.8%. The youth with family incomes below the poverty line are more likely to live in poverty than the youth who receive incomes above the poverty line. In 2017, the youth living in families with incomes below the poverty line represented 44.2% of the youth population. The poverty rate for families in which the mother and father had never graduated from high school was as high as 26.8%.
The 2018 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) conducted by the CDC found that youth who drink alcohol and use illegal drugs are more likely to be violent. In 2018, 27.9% of the youth had consumed alcohol in the previous month, 9.9% used illegal drugs in the past 30 days, and 25.5% had carried a weapon in the past 30 days.
