It is one of the two films to have starred Donnie Yen and Michelle Yeoh in the lead roles, the other being The Invincible (1978), which was also produced by the production company Golden Harvest.
The film earned Yen a nomination for the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor.
Plot
A Shaolin monk asks his guru to protect a group of orphans, which his master agrees to do. But, the boy's father kidnaps the orphans and takes them away. Shaolin Master Killer is sent to protect them. It's a dangerous job, but Shaolin Master Killer is successful and he even saves the orphans' life when one of them is accidentally killed. Later on, he is given a kung fu name, Shao Lin San Shi Liu Fang. He saves another boy, Dong Dong, from a thug, but he is not aware that Dong Dong is the son of the man he killed earlier. To keep from getting captured, Shao Lin San Shi Liu Fang breaks into the house and kills the thug. Shao Lin San Shi Liu Fang stops a gang from capturing another orphan. He is injured when a shot from a gun is fired at him. He falls into a river. The orphans stay on the ship until they arrive at the orphanage.

The film was released in Hong Kong in 1978. The title of the film was later changed to The 36th Chamber of Shaolin.
